Information on

Adoption

Rescuing, Rehabilitating and Re-homing Northern Breed Dogs.

Adoption Information

Please note that it is our policy to only adopt out to applicants from Idaho or our neighboring states of Montana, Wyoming, Utah and northern Nevada, where few Northern Breed rescue organizations are yet established. If you are not within these 5 states, then please contact the Northern Breed rescue in your state where there are undoubtedly many rescue Dogs in need of homes. We also do not adopt into Canada. Please see a listing of affiliate rescues here.

Some of our adult dogs cannot be adopted out to families with children under the age of 8 for a variety of reasons. The dogs that can be around younger children will have a note in their listing that specifically states the age of the children that they have successfully interacted with for an extended period of time. Please understand that this is not only for the safety of your children, but also for the safety of the dog. A large, strong, stubborn northern breed dog may not be the best choice for your family, no matter how beautiful they are.

We do require an adoption application, references, and a home visit, as well as a contract and post adoption visit. We ask that you fill out the adoption application before meeting our rescue dogs. Once we receive your application, we can set up a meet and greet with your family (two and four legged) and the dog. We check the references you provide, so please make sure the information you give us is accurate, or we may choose to deny your application based on the fact that we were provided with misleading information.

All MMR dogs are spayed or neutered, current on vaccinations, heartworm tested and micro chipped. Any health or behavioral issues will be noted in writing as well.

Fees and Requirements

A donation adoption fee for each of our dogs is required to offset the expenses involved with making sure the dog you take home is a healthy one. Without assessing a donation we would not be able to afford to continue rescuing these glorious but sometimes difficult northern breeds, so we appreciate your understanding in this matter. We ask a donation fee of $250 for our Northern Breed dogs. Puppies (which we rarely get) are $350 with a $50 refund once proof of altering has been received. We also require a $50 deposit that will be refunded upon completion of contractual requirements associated with adoption. Please read our Minimum Requirements for adopting below.

We ALWAYS take our dogs back at any time in their lives, so if your circumstances change and you must give up the dog, please email us immediately so we can make new arrangements for the dog. However, do be aware that we are only able to refund your adoption donation within the first 30 days of the adoption.

We will not adopt if:

Minimum Requirements

  • You are under 23 years of age.
  • You do not have a well fenced yard. Well fenced is defined as a minimum height of 5′ tall (some dogs will need a higher fence) with no gaps or spaces over 3″ wide, and an equally sturdy gate that cannot be lifted off its hinges easily, and latches securely (preferably one that can be kept in place with a sturdy clip or padlock). Invisible fences are invisible, hence the name. They won’t protect your pet from other animals or malicious people, nor will they stop your pet from killing another animal that crosses into that area. Many Mals will take the “hit” to get out of these.
  • You intend to use aversive, negative and outdated training methods and devices on the dog. These devices can include choke chains, prong and shock/vibration collars.  We are happy to help educate why these methods are considered adverse.
  • There are children under the age of 8 living in your home (there may be exceptions, depending on the dog, please read the available dog descriptions carefully).
  • You are unable or unwilling to spend the time and money necessary to provide training, medical treatment and proper care for a pet
  • You cannot provide a minimum total of 45 minutes of daily exercise for the dog.
  • You expect the dog to live outside full time.
  • You have a low tolerance for dog hair.
  • You or anyone living in your household have ever been charged with a sex crime, animal cruelty, or domestic battery.
  • You own an un-altered pet over the age of 2 that is not shown or proven in the conformation ring.  You must intend to alter the pet shortly after it reaches the age of 2 or we reserve the right to void the adoption and bring the dog back into rescue.
  • You rent and cannot provide a letter from your landlord that you can have a pet over 60 lbs.
